It can prove to be good idea to prepare for such events in earlier stages so that the post-disaster survival can be made somewhat easier. This step can help those people who have to face hurricanes frequently and as a routine matter.

As the hurricane may not leave anything useable after the event, a small kit like baggage should be prepared in which some essentials can be packed for later use. The baggage can contain objects which may be most required by a human like food, water, shelter, clothing etc. Some simple hardware can also come in handy after the destruction. Some pliers, wrenches, knives can come into use during the trying times.

The food kept should be able to last for a longer period and also should not require any kind of storage facility like cooling. Water should also be kept keeping in mind that a single person can use one gallon of water per day for drinking purpose. It is also recommended to keep some water purifying tablet at hand in case another water source is available but in impure form.

Hurricanes can also lead to damage of the houses. The water piping may also have to undergo some damage as well. A wrench can be used to close any working valves so that wastage of water can be prevented. Pliers can also aid in this task.

Warm clothing and blankets should be kept in case of cold weather. A hand powered flashlight and radio should also be a part of the kit in order to search in the night and to hear about the updates of the areas rescue work from a local radio station.

Other preparations can include keeping some extra money in case there may be a need for it in buying some essentials when the rehabilitation starts. A spare debit card can also help in such situations. Other than that, important documents like passports, marriage certificate, wills etc. should also be kept to avoid possible problems in the future. Some general medicines should also be kept which can come into use in the disaster.
